While Ultra Low Temperature (-80) freezers consume significantly more electricity than -20s, -20 freezers must be regularly maintained for energy efficiency. Many -20 freezers build up significant ice over time. This ice can restrict the ability of the compressor to move away unwanted heat. This makes the compressor run longer, which decreases the lifespan of the freezer and causes it to use more energy.  Ice can also limit the capacity of the freezer over time, and samples can become lost or hidden.

Need help defrosting your -20 freezer? We have kits!

Email energy@fas.harvard.edu and we will lend you the following supplies:

  • Containers to put on the shelves to collect water
  • Towels to soak up water that reaches the floor
  • A mop to clean up any additional water

This program is currently only offered to FAS.
