The Challenge: The Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) Infrastructure Data Center team, along with other HUIT groups, Campus Services, and vendors have implemented several energy and cost-savings programs over the past five years and wanted to further lower the data center’s power usage and reduce costs by targeting the data center cooling equipment.

The Solution: The computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units were updated with variable speed drives to allow the fan speed and air flow to be adjusted to match the cooling needs of the room rather than always running at high speed. Project implementation began in July 2011, and 8 of the 9 CRAC units have now been updated.

Environmental Benefits and Cost Savings:

  •     Monthly energy consumption cut approximately in half
  •     Monthly cost savings of $3,000 per month
  •     NSTAR rebate reduces upfront costs by $25,000
