Supporting innovation in food

Join the HLS Food Law Society & the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology for a discussion about what role the law can play in supporting innovative food technologies. Plant-based meats, genetically modified seeds, and lab-grown meats are just a few fields in which science is being used to create new food products that could be on your plate in the not-so-distant future! Many areas of law are necessarily implicated in bringing these kinds of new foods from the lab to the market. How can the law best be used to encourage innovations in food? What can lawyers do to help?

Kathi Cover, counsel at Sidely Austin and former Vice President – Intellectual Property, and Assistant General Counsel for DTS, Inc., (formerly iBiquity Digital Corporation), will provide an overview of the potential legal issues facing innovative food products, followed by a discussion with Phil Poirier, an attorney at DowAgro, and Isha Datar, Executive Director of New Harvest. Mr. Poirier and Ms. Datar will discuss how the law can both help and hinder research in food innovation at different stages followed by Q&A from the audience.
