Congratulations to the following 3 new HLS Green Offices:

Financial Office

Human Resources

Dean for Administration

These offices have used the Office for Sustainability’s Green Office Program guidelines to take simple steps to improve the environmental friendliness of their work spaces and practices, including pledging to turn off lights and electronics when they leave the office and using recycled-content paper.

Anna Bennett Robertson from the Financial Office said becoming Green Office was relatively easy because people in her office were already taking many of the steps the program advises:

“We didn’t have to change much – many of the things on the lists we do already, or we just needed to expand upon.  [Following the Leaf One checklist step to use 30% recycled-content] paper for instance – we were already at 20% so we just moved up a bit. In the end people in our office have rallied and are doing really well with using mugs and washing them, or using plastic ware that they wash in the sink and keep in their desks.”

Anna and her Green Office co-leader Alec Antell helped motivate their office mates and made achieving leaves fun by creating a ‘Green Award’:

“If we saw someone doing something green, we would announce it like, ‘Oh, Carol! You’ve been washing your silverware – that’s a Green Award for you!’  Even though it was in jest, it still got people laughing and saying ‘I want a Green Award!’”

Thanks to Anna and Alec’s, and Green Team members Kathy Thurman (HR office) and Diane Long’s (Dean for Administration office) hard work helping their offices go green, we are 60% of the way to our goal of 5 new HLS Green Offices during the Spring 2011 semester.
